AP 과목들은 지원자가 학업적으로 성숙했음을 보여줄 수 있기 때문에 성적표에서 단연 부각된다. 많은 학교에서 AP 수업 학점은 가산 점을 부여할 정도로 비중 있게 다루어진다. 예를 들어 AP 과목의 B는 일반 과목의 B가 3.0 인데 반해 3.5로 취급된다.

AP 수업을 듣는 것은 다수의 명문 대학을 진학함에 있어 알려지지 않은 요구조건이 되고 있다. 실제 아이비리그에 합격하는 학생의 경우, 보통 6~10개의 AP과목들을 이수한다. 입학 사정 위원회에게 좋은 인상을 줄 수 있는 것은 AP 수업들을 들었다고 하는 사실이 아니라 실제 AP 시험에서 4~5 점의 높은 점수를 받는 것이다. 반면, AP과목을 이수했으나, AP 시험에 응시하지 않았다면 불이익을 받을 수 있다.

AP Program은 AP 시험 성적이 우수한 학생들에게 AP Scholar Award를 수여하는데, 이 수상경력은 대학입시에서 경쟁력을 많이 높여준다.

Award Levels

AP Scholar with Honor
Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

AP Scholar with Distinction
Granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

State AP Scholar
Granted to the one male and one female student in each U.S. state and the District of Columbia with scores of 3 or higher on the greatest number of AP Exams, and then the highest average score (at least 3.5) on all AP Exams taken.

National AP Scholar
Granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

International AP Scholar
Granted to the one male and one female student attending a school outside the United States and Canada that is not a DoDEA school with the highest average score on the greatest number of AP Exams. The minimum requirement is a score of 3 or higher on three exams.

재학 중인 고교에서 AP 과목을 들었다면 시험등록에 대해 AP Teacher나 AP Coordinator와 시험 응시에 대해 상의하고 등록한다.

한국 내에서 미국 AP 시험을 보기 위해서는 미국 AP 시험 공식 시험장소로 지정되어 있는 한미교육위원단이나 각 고등학교의 AP 담당자에게 연락을 해서 응시료를 내고 접수한다. 등록기간은 매년 3월초이며, 비용은 과목당 200,000원이다.
